The Patrons
"...echoes of The Band, Gram Parsons-era Byrds, soul, country, and the whole range of American music." - Peter Guralnick, author of The Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley.
Jonah Kraut - from Chicago - vocals and guitar
Matt Borushko - from Detroit - guitar
Ryan Barrett - from Boston - vocals and drums
Matt Riley - from New York - bass
Cory Bortnicker - from Philadelphia - vocals and keyboards
The Patrons were originally connected through Matt Borushko's classified in the Boston Phoenix. It wasn't long before they were entering Blue Jay Recording Studio to record their debut album All That Is Tied.
All That Is Tied is polished and impressive. The Patrons have paid attention to their heroes. Their classic country-rock is infused with soul and performed with conviction.
The Patrons' debut All That is Tied begins with a drum hit, a pedal steel swell and a "good old love song," then winds through many of the sub-genres of American music. The Patrons move swiftly from story-song country ("I'll Be Betting All My Love on You") to old timey folk ("Nothing Comes Easy") to honky-tonk ("It's All He Knows") to soul ballad ("All That Is Tied") to the blues ("Didn't Love You Anyway"). And that's just the first half.
The five members all currently reside in Boston, but they each hail from a different part of the country. Founding member and rhythm guitarist Matt Borushko is from Detroit, vocalist and lead guitarist Jonah Kraut from Chicago, vocalist and keyboardist Cory Bortnicker from Philadelphia, bassist Matthew Riley from New York, and vocalist and drummer Ryan Barrett from here in Boston. Staying consistent with their variety of locales, each member contributes his own distinct sound and musicality to the group. Kraut, Borushko, and Bortnicker wrote all of the songs, often times collaborating with each other, giving All That is Tied an overall cohesion. This is also in thanks to the smooth and fluid production quality.
The Patrons are well-versed in the history and lineage of the music they play. Recognizing the personal interpretation of American music by such artists as Bob Dylan, The Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones (specifically Exile), The Patrons add an older substance to today's standard "roots rock" act.
